Do I prefer retro gaming over current generation gaming or vice versa?
I love them equally.
Gaming has obviously always been a massive part of my life. If it weren’t for the retro stuff my pure love of gaming wouldn’t exist.
In saying that though, I am totally obsessed with the current generation of gaming. The depth and stories that now go into producing games blows my mind everyday.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RETRO AND CURRENT GEN
I don’t know about you but when I think “retro gaming” I instantly think Super Mario and 8-bit. It’s amazing to look back now and see how poorly the gaming graphics were compared to now. Back then though, we all thought that it was amazing! Our eyes couldn’t have seen anything better. What I love most about some retro games is the simplicity of them. Super Mario for example: The easiest play through of a game I have ever done – although I did have struggles with some levels as a kid. But what I mean by it being simple is all you had to do was run sideways, jump on a few enemies, hit some boxes and power up. It was so easy to learn how to play games as a kid with these dynamics.
Yes, there are many other genres of games in the retro aspect. However, I only ever played platform, puzzle and racing games. I never played open world/open adventure, RPG style games and shooters (both first person and third person). It’s thanks to current gen gaming and the magnificent titles available to play where my love of these styles of games has evolved.
With current gen games, they now incorporate so many different dynamics compared to 20 years ago. There is so much more story development, obviously better graphics, easier combat and movement, and extended amounts of gameplay time. I have loved seeing the evolution of games and it is one of the reasons why I love them. Nowadays when I play games, I get so drawn towards the stories they produce. I also find it great how most games now have levels of difficulty – this has helped me gain skill slowly but surely in combat since I came from a background of little to no skill!
What I have noticed lately with new releases I have been playing, I have been able to see the effort developers have been putting into production. It’s so clear to see how much time goes into making games because for the most part, they are made to perfection. Now that I own a PS4 Pro, graphically I am more impressed than ever. I am also impressed at the rate games play and load. I sit and think to myself “how did I ever play through a game back then considering the massive difference?”. But I mustn’t forget that if it weren’t for retro, we wouldn’t have what we have today.
So, why do I love both?
They are so different. I love re-living my childhood with retro while at the same time I love furthering my skill and abilities with current gen.
